Solar ATAP Explained: How Rooftop Solar Credits Work in Malaysia

What Is Solar ATAP?

Solar ATAP (Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme) is Malaysia's rooftop solar programme for new installations. It started on 1 January 2026 and replaced Net Energy Metering (NEM). If you install solar panels on your home today, this is the programme you come under.

How Solar ATAP Works

1. During the day: your solar panels generate electricity and your home uses it first
2. Extra energy: what you do not use flows to the TNB grid
3. Credits: the exported energy is credited against the energy charge on your bill for that month
4. End of the month: credits you did not use do not carry over to the next bill

What Changed from NEM

Example: One Day Under Solar ATAP

• Solar production: 25 kWh
• Used directly at home during the day: 15 kWh
• Exported to the grid: 10 kWh
• Night usage from the grid: 15 kWh

The 15 kWh you used directly never appears on your bill. The 10 kWh you exported comes back as a credit against the energy charge for the month. This is why a system sized to your daytime use makes more sense than an oversized one.

System Size Limits for Homes

• Single-phase supply: up to 5 kW
• Three-phase supply: up to 15 kW

How to Apply

A Solar ATAP application is submitted by a SEDA-registered PV service provider, not by the homeowner. SolarKita handles it:

Getting the Most from Solar ATAP

• Size the system to your daytime use — credits end with the billing month
• Move heavy loads to the daytime — washing machine, water heater, air conditioning
• Consider a battery if most of your usage is at night
• Monitor production — use the monitoring app to track daily generation
• Keep the panels clean — clean panels produce more

The SuRIA Home Rebate

Homes that install under Solar ATAP can also qualify for the SuRIA Home cash rebate: RM600 per kWac, up to RM3,000, for systems commissioned by 31 December 2026.
