When a home in Peninsular Malaysia installs solar panels, TNB installs the bi-directional meter and credits exported energy under Solar ATAP. TNB also pays the SuRIA Home rebate. SEDA handles the Solar ATAP application, submitted by a registered installer. You do not apply to TNB yourself.
Who Does What: TNB, SEDA and Your Installer
Three parties are involved when a home in Peninsular Malaysia installs solar panels. Knowing who does what saves you from applying to the wrong one.
- TNB supplies your electricity, installs the bi-directional meter, credits your exported energy on your bill, and pays the SuRIA Home rebate.
- SEDA, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority, runs Solar ATAP and keeps the directory of registered installers. Your installer submits the application to SEDA.
- Your installer designs the system, submits the Solar ATAP application, installs the panels and commissions the system.
You do not apply to TNB yourself, and you do not apply for the rebate yourself.
Solar ATAP: TNB's Part in Your Bill
Solar ATAP is the programme every new rooftop system in Peninsular Malaysia comes under since 1 January 2026. Your home uses its own solar power first. What is left flows to the TNB grid.
TNB credits the exported energy against the energy charge on that month's bill. Credits you do not use end with the month. A home on single-phase supply can install up to 5 kW, and a home on three-phase supply up to 15 kW. The contract runs for 10 years.
The Meter
After the system is commissioned, TNB replaces your meter with a bi-directional one. It counts energy in both directions: what you draw at night as import, and what your panels send out in the day as export. That export figure is what TNB turns into your credit.

SuRIA Home: TNB Pays the Rebate
The SuRIA Home rebate is RM600 per kWac of inverter output, up to RM3,000. It is for systems installed under Solar ATAP and commissioned by 31 December 2026. It is first come, first served.
There is no form. TNB emails eligible customers at the address on their account, asks for bank details, and transfers the money. Anyone who charges a fee to "apply for the rebate" is charging for nothing.
Your TNB Account
Three things on your TNB bill matter before you start.
- The name. The account must be a domestic account in your own name. A company account does not qualify for SuRIA Home.
- The email. TNB writes to the address on the account. Make sure it is one you read.
- The supply. The bill shows whether your home is on single-phase or three-phase supply, which sets the size limit.
TNB Sells Solar Too: GSPARX
TNB has a wholly owned subsidiary, GSPARX, that sells rooftop solar systems with financing. You are free to buy from GSPARX or from any other registered provider. The meter, the Solar ATAP credits and the rebate are the same whoever installs the system. Compare quotations on the equipment, the warranty and the service.

Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan
TNB supplies Peninsular Malaysia only. Sabah and Labuan are supplied by Sabah Electricity, and Sarawak by Sarawak Energy. Each has its own scheme, described on our pages for Sabah and Sarawak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I apply to TNB to install solar panels?
No. A PV service provider registered with SEDA submits the Solar ATAP application for you. After approval and installation, TNB installs the bi-directional meter.
Does TNB pay for the electricity my panels export?
Not in cash. Under Solar ATAP, exported energy is credited against the energy charge on the same month's bill. Credits you do not use do not carry over.
What is GSPARX?
GSPARX is TNB's wholly owned subsidiary that sells rooftop solar systems. You may buy from it or from any other registered provider; the meter and the credits are the same whoever installs.
Does TNB pay the SuRIA Home rebate?
Yes. After your Solar ATAP system is commissioned, TNB emails eligible customers, asks for bank details and transfers RM600 per kWac, up to RM3,000. No installer applies for it.
Can I get Solar ATAP if my electricity is not from TNB?
No. Solar ATAP and SuRIA Home are for TNB customers in Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah and Labuan are supplied by Sabah Electricity and Sarawak by Sarawak Energy, each with its own scheme.
