A home solar system in Malaysia is 4 kW to 12 kW of panels, an inverter, a mounting system and a TNB bi-directional meter. It costs about RM15,000 to RM45,000, saves an estimated RM200 to RM900 a month depending on size, and takes one to three days to install.
What a Home Solar System Is
A home solar system has five parts: panels on the roof, an inverter, a mounting system, a bi-directional meter and a monitoring app. The inverter turns the panels' direct current into the current your home uses. TNB installs the meter after commissioning, and the app shows what the panels produce.
Most homes in Malaysia install an on-grid system. It has no battery. The home uses the solar power as it is made. What is left goes to the TNB grid for a credit under Solar ATAP.
Which Size Fits Which House
| House | System | Panels | Price | Estimated saving a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small terrace house | 4 kW | 8 to 10 | RM15,000 to RM18,000 | RM200 to RM350 |
| Medium terrace or semi-D | 6 kW | 12 to 15 | RM20,000 to RM25,000 | RM300 to RM500 |
| Semi-D or small bungalow | 8 kW | 16 to 20 | RM25,000 to RM30,000 | RM400 to RM600 |
| Large semi-D or bungalow | 10 kW | 20 to 25 | RM30,000 to RM38,000 | RM500 to RM750 |
| Bungalow or large home | 12 kW | 24 to 30 | RM35,000 to RM45,000 | RM600 to RM900 |
The house type is a guide. What really sets the size is how much electricity you use in the daytime, because that is the power that saves the most. A home on single-phase supply can install up to 5 kW under Solar ATAP; larger systems need three-phase supply.
What It Costs
Our home systems cost RM15,000 to RM45,000. The price covers the panels, the inverter, the mounting, the wiring, the Solar ATAP application, the installation and the warranty. The price table has the full ranges.
Eligible homes get the SuRIA Home rebate back: RM600 per kWac, up to RM3,000, for systems commissioned by 31 December 2026. A 4 kW system at RM15,000 comes to RM12,600 after a RM2,400 rebate. At the savings in the table, most homes recover the cost in four to six years.
What It Produces
In Malaysia, 1 kW of panels makes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 kWh a day. An 8 kW system makes about 28 to 36 kWh on a typical day. Shade, heat and dirt lower the figure; the monitoring app shows the real number.

What Happens, From First Message to First Credit
- You send your TNB bill and a roof photo on WhatsApp.
- Site assessment. We check the roof, the shade and whether your supply is single-phase or three-phase.
- Proposal within 48 hours, with the system size, the price and the expected saving.
- Solar ATAP application, prepared and submitted by us.
- Installation, one to three days for a home.
- Commissioning, and TNB installs the bi-directional meter.
- Your next bill shows the credit, and TNB contacts you about the rebate.
Is Your House Suitable?
Four things make a house a good fit.
- You own the roof, and it gets sun through the day
- Your bill is large enough for the saving to matter
- Someone uses electricity in the daytime, or you are willing to shift washing and water heating to the day
- Your electricity comes from TNB

Frequently Asked Questions
How many solar panels does a house need?
A terrace house usually takes a 4 kW system of 8 to 10 panels. A semi-detached house takes 6 to 8 kW, and a bungalow 10 to 12 kW, which is up to 30 panels. Your daytime electricity use decides the size.
How much does a solar system cost for a terrace house?
Our 4 kW package starts at RM15,000. With the SuRIA Home rebate of RM2,400 for a 4 kWac inverter, it comes to RM12,600.
How long does it take to install solar panels on a house?
One to three days for the installation itself. Before that, the site assessment, the proposal and the Solar ATAP application take a few weeks.
Do I need a battery for a home solar system?
No. Most home systems are on-grid and have no battery. A battery is an option if your power goes out often or most of your use is at night.
Will solar panels power my house during a blackout?
Not without a battery. An on-grid inverter switches off when the grid is down, for the safety of people working on the lines. A hybrid system with a battery keeps chosen circuits on.
