Installing solar panels on a home in Malaysia costs about RM15,000 to RM45,000, depending on system size. The price is made of five parts: panels, inverter, mounting and wiring, labour, and paperwork. A good quotation lists each part with its brand, model and warranty.
What Makes Up the Cost of a Home Solar Installation
A solar quotation is one number, but it pays for five different things. Knowing them helps you compare two quotations that look alike.
Our home systems cost RM15,000 to RM45,000 depending on size. The table of solar panel prices by system size has the full range. This guide looks at what is inside that price.
The Five Parts of the Price
1. Solar panels
The panels are usually the largest part of the price. Their cost depends on how many you need and on the maker. A 4 kW system uses 8 to 10 panels, and an 8 kW system 16 to 20.
2. Inverter
The inverter turns the panels' DC power into AC power for your home. A grid-tied inverter costs less than a hybrid inverter, which can also work with a battery.
3. Mounting and wiring
This covers the aluminium rails, the stainless steel brackets, the cables and the protection devices. You do not see most of it, but it decides how long the system lasts on your roof.
4. Installation labour
A home installation takes one to three days. The team fixes the mounting, lays the cables, connects the inverter and tests the system.
5. Paperwork
The Solar ATAP application is part of every SolarKita package. TNB then installs the bi-directional meter.

Why One Home Costs More Than Another
Two homes that buy the same system size can still get different prices.
- Roof material. Tile roofs take more mounting work than metal roofs.
- Roof shape. A roof broken into small faces needs more rails and cable than one large face.
- Height and access. A three-storey house or a narrow lane makes the job slower.
- Distance to the meter. A long cable run from the roof to the switchboard adds material.
- Type of supply. Under Solar ATAP a single-phase home can install up to 5 kW. A larger system needs three-phase supply.
What a Good Quotation Lists
Ask for these in writing before you compare prices:
- Brand and model of the panels, and how many
- Brand and model of the inverter
- System size in kW
- Warranty on the panels, the inverter and the workmanship
- What is included: mounting, wiring, Solar ATAP application, commissioning
- Payment stages
- The estimated monthly saving, and how it was worked out
A quotation that gives only a total cannot be compared with anything.
Costs After Installation
A solar system has few running costs, but it has some.
- Cleaning. Panels need a rinse now and then. Our maintenance visits start from RM300.
- Inverter. Its warranty is shorter than the panels', 5 to 10 years depending on the model. It may need replacing during the life of the system.
- Battery, if you have one. A battery wears out before the panels do.
Our solar panel maintenance guide covers the upkeep.
What the SuRIA Home Rebate Takes Off
Eligible homes get RM600 per kWac back, up to RM3,000, for systems commissioned by 31 December 2026. TNB pays it after the system is running. An 8 kW system at RM28,000 comes to RM25,000 after the rebate.
Paying for It
You can pay in full or spread the cost. Our guide to solar panel financing explains how to compare an instalment with the saving on your bill.
